Horizon Hospice Inpatient Unit

Volunteers who serve at the Horizon Inpatient Unit find this role extremely fulfilling.  There are three different ways to serve at the Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mequon, all of which are easy for your busy schedules and offer a team approach to service!  Please review the following Horizon volunteer roles and decide which opportunity works best for your comfort level and skill set:

Companion

Description:

Hospice Companions are oustanding individuls who are trained to provide assistance to staff by feeding, re-positioning, and transporting patients. Volunteers also learn how to communicate with the dying, assist with life review, and be a peaceful, loving presence.

You will enjoy connecting with hospice patients, families, and our incredible Horizon staff in a consistent 4 hour schedule each week. We can discuss scheduling needs if you are not able to serve the full 4 hours / every week.

Shift Needs: The Unit is open 24/7 and we can usually accomodate your scheduling needs

Requirements:

To serve in this role volunteers must receive the appropriate trainings, which our current volunteers have found very enjoyable. You will get to know the Agency and build your volunteer confidence as we discuss hospice basics, death & dying, bereavement, physical support to the dying, etc.

The majority of volunteers that serve as Hospice Companions have experienced a significant death in their own lives, which helps to provide sincere compassion to families and patients. We ask that you are aware of your experience and understand your level of grief; please be prepared to communicate your experiences with the Hospice Development Coordinator in your interview and orientation(s).  If you have not had a significant death in you life, please understand that this does not disqualify you from serving in this role. We welcome all who have open minds, loving hearts, and the willingness to serve in this courageous service role.

Concierge

Description:

Horizon needs an army of volunteers to serve in the Concierge Role, offering friendly assistance to patients, families and our staff at the nurses greeting station. There are no phones to answer — your warm smile and help with upkeep, activities, and making rounds on the floor are your main duties. This role is one of the most significant volunteer roles, as you will be the “eyes & ears” of the hospice residence, helping staff run a smooth program and cater to patients & families.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be reliable and capable of offering a warm welcome to those who enter the hospice residence.

Greeter

Description:

Share your customer service savvy with guests on our Horizon Hospice In-Patient Unit. Greeters are stationed at the unit entry desk to acknowledge all who are coming and going, escort guests to patient rooms, and assist with clerical projects. Additionally, Greeters help to keep the hospice unit welcoming by making coffee, wrapping pastries, repurposing flowers, and preparing vacant rooms.

Those who serve in this role have helped in so many different ways! If you are a student trying to cram for a big test, we allow you the time to study at the desk. If you are a talented knitter who loves to create, we encourage you to 'sit and knit.' The greatest priorities of the Greeter are to be both accommodating and resourceful.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be reliable to the shift he or she accepts.
