Palliative Care is a service available for those patients who are battling a life-limiting illness but aren’t yet in its final state. The goals of Palliative Care are controlling pain, minimizing related symptoms and helping patients deal with the psychological implications of their condition.

Palliative Care services attempt to achieve the best possible quality of life and a high level of daily functioning of patient and their families. The Palliative Care program at Horizon focuses on patients with a non-curable diagnosis who might be seeking active treatment and who do not meet the criteria for the Hospice benefit or prefer to retain all treatment options for their disease.

Palliative Care, like Hospice, is guided by some of the same principles at Horizon: symptom management, psychosocial, and spiritual support. Palliative care, however, involves intervention, focusing on reestablishing patient function to the highest level possible after an acute episode or setback.
